Michael Lester is celebrated for his remarkable command of perspective, his precise rendering of distance, and his vibrant, dynamic compositions. These qualities are strikingly evident in three works from the Garlandstone Arts Collection: Wicked Boy Morgan (1962), Woman in Tenement Yard (1955), and Yachts at Port Royal (1953). Each painting demonstrates Lester’s ability to intertwine narrative and visual depth, offering viewers both accuracy and imagination. Wicked Boy Morgan, recently conserved and restored, draws on the legend of Sir Henry Morgan, with the watchful dog guarding a treasure chest symbolizing the notorious “Sea-Dogs” of the 1600s. In Woman in Tenement Yard, perspective shifts from above, revealing a lush breadfruit tree and a woman absorbed in her task, evoking the abundance of Jamaica’s tropical landscape. Finally, Yachts at Port Royal unites motifs of anchors and palm fronds with deft spatial depth, guiding the eye from foreground figures to distant waters, underscoring Lester’s artistic mastery and the enduring spirit of Jamaica.
